The change in online poker

When I started playing poker online in early 2005 it was a lot of fun to play poker online.  People were very nice at the tables and I used to chat a lot while playing.  I’ve actually made quite a few friends by chatting at the tables that I’ve met in real life, both in Sweden and abroad.  In the fall of 2005 we actually organized a gathering at the Casino in Gothenburg for about 20 of us who played the same stakes and tables online.  We played 2 tournaments and hung out and it was lots of fun :)

That has changed!  Nowadays it’s not enough to take somebodys money.   You have to offend them and rub it in as well.  Hateful comments and slowrolls are very common today at the tables.  A very sad development and I can just hope that it is not a trend that is here to stay…

Bust

62 players left, I had 25,2k which was about half of the average stack. With blinds of 600/1200 and ante 100 there was still room for some play.

I get to pick up two pots preflop during the 10-15 first hands, both times with AK.  Nobody wanted to play with me :(

A few hands later I’m in big blind and a player makes it 3500 preflop from midposition.  3 players call behind and there is more than 16k in the pot now.  With a stack of 27.2k it’s a very tempting spot to take a gamble with a decent hand since I will get good odds against most hands preflop.  I look down at AK and my move is obvious.  I move all in and after some thought the first player call.  Almost instantly the player behind goes all in and now I’m not comfortable anymore.  I know I need to get lucky. The other two fold and it’s back to the first raiser who called my push.  He thinks for a while and folds (tells me later it was QQ).  I’m really happy to see that my opponent has TT and I’m in a coinflip to win a pot of over 90k having put in only 27k.  Unfortunately coinflips is my biggest weakness in tournaments and the boards T5348 is the end of the day for me.  I finish in about 48th.  Sad, but at least I get to celebrate New Years with my family :)

This tournament was my last for PokerTime.  We’ve had a long and rewarding collaboration, but unfortunately we’ll go separate ways now.  I’m very thankful for my time with them and I wish them the best of luck in the future.

What happens next for me and my poker career only time will tell…

NM: main event

Main Event!  Having found harmony in my game again it was time to make something good happen.  At my first table I knew or knew of about half of the players.  Nobody were too much trouble and the table was pretty nice and calm.

I win many small pots early on and build up a little bit.  I play a bigger pot vs Ferit where I have nut-straight on turn, and when I check on the river when the board pairs and the flushdraw miss to induce a bluff he wisely checks his overpair behind :(   I build up nice and slow to 35 from the original 25k when I lose a big pot with AA vs JJ.  Flop was a very safe J52 or so I thought. His hands were very shaky preflop indicating a very strong hand, it’s just typical it had to be the jacks.

Up and down but during level 7 (out of 9 day 1) I go on a rush and build up to almost 50k winning lots of small pots.  Unfortunately I think it’s a good idea to shoot 4 barrels vs the wrong player who calls me down with KJ on a K-high board all streets and I’m back down below starting stack.  I managed to rebuild somewhat and ended day 1 with 25,2k.

62 players left ot of 110
Averge 44k
Blinds 600/1200 ante 100 when we start tomorrow

Wish me luck :)
