Preparing for a live tournament

When playing in live events it is important that you prepare properly to make sure you play the best poker you can.  So how do you prepare for a big event?  Well first of all it is important to get enough sleep so that you come well rested and are ready for what should be a long day at the tables. Most major tournaments run for 10-12 hour a day incuding breaks.  I’ve seen players get tired towards the end of the day and give away their chips playing badly so many times.  Another way of preparing is to make sure you are in shape physically, since that helps you to stay focused and concentrated throughout the long hours of play.  You see far too many players with “poker-bellys” at the tables, which brings us to the next subject: food.  Try to avoid eating anything heavy such as fried or fatty food during the course of a tournament.  Such foods use more energy to break down and also release hormones that make you sleepy.  Hence you have less energy to use on playing poker.  Try to eat light foods such as salad, fish and fruit to stay on top of your game.  Of course the same goes for drinking, avoid alcohol and drinks with cafein such as softdrinks and coffee.

Of course how you prepare for a tournament and what gives you your best results is individual so my best advice to you is try to remember what works and don’t work for you so you give yourself maximum chance of winning when participating.

Today I played the first day of the EPT Copenhagen.  Here is a video report from the day.  Unfortunately I busted :(  I rarely bluff all-in and put my tournament life on the line in a tournament, today I did and look what happend :(  Fortunately next tournament is around the corner and hopefully I’ll do better there! :)

Mixing up your game(s)

Having played poker full time for almost four years now I know first hand that it is very easy to get bad habits. If you play the same tables with the same players at the same time and the same way every day, the good players will eat you alive.  For example, if you always bet your strong hands, call with your drawing hands, and fold when you got nothing you will become very predictable.  You have to check-raise on a bluff sometimes even when you miss to keep your opponent guessing.  Being unpredictable should be a very important part of your game.

It is also important to mix up your game in other ways.  If you play poker full time, or at least quite a bit of it, it is easy to get the feeling it is just another 9-5 job.  It isn’t so don’t make it one!  There are plenty of ways to vary your game to avoid this.  For example you can mix your online grind with some live games and tournaments to avoid doing the same thing every day.  Also you can try playing another form of poker.  If you always play 10-seat texas hold’em no limit, maybe you could try playing some omaha or at least 6-seat texas.  Besides avoid getting bored you challenge yourself and who knows, you might also find that there is something more fun and more profitable in poker than what you’re playing at the moment.  Make it a habit to mix it up!

Todays session

Todays poker session would either have ended in a massive bad beat streak or possibly something like you can see in the picture below.  I decided to take the day off.  Only a madman plays poker on Friday the 13th don’t you agree?
